CARLO

Novel: Goddess of Flames

Genre: Fantasy/Supernatural

Who is Carlo?

Carlo is Naya’s laid-back, easygoing “brother” of sorts. Though they don’t look related, they are connected by the bit of Naya’s soul essence inside of him, which bonds them for all eternity.
He and his large family came to America from Cuba as refugees when he was 10. After spending a few months in Miami, his father worried there would be too much trouble for his children to get into as they got older. So he pledged to find them a better life, moving them out of Florida and eventually finding work as a janitor and migrant worker in… South Carolina?!
And while his dad did take the time to apply for permanent resident status, they were technically never “legal citizens”, if you catch the drift.
So as the new, shy – and undocumented – kid in town who didn’t speak any English, Carlo just tried to fly under the radar and remain as invisible as possible. A very lonely existence for a 10-year-old boy.
Until the shy Korean girl in his class – who was always being picked on – sat next to him at lunch and struggled to talk to him in broken Spanish, leafing feverishly through a Spanish-English dictionary the entire time.  She began to teach him English shortly after that, and they were fast friends from that point on.
On the fateful night that he and Ana got turned, his entire life changed. Not only did he lose part of his humanity, but he lost his entire family during the rising wave of demon possessions.
Carlo has pledged his allegiance to Naya’s cause, never hesitating to back up her and Ana, no matter how deadly the battle may seem. He never hesitates to jump to the defense of someone in need, but he tends to be the peacemaker of the group.  He actually prefers to spend his days relaxing and smoking weed, a stark contrast to his best friend Ana’s fiery nature.
Due to his naturally optimistic and helpful nature, oftentimes his problems are not actually addressed, let alone noticed. In actuality, Carlo is constantly tortured by the demon soul attached to his, but he chooses to endure the pain with weed, an unceasing smile, and optimism that the group truly needs in these dark times.
Carlo has the power to control fire in a combination with water. His most common attack is the Water Flame, a powerful fireball that takes on the motion of water.

The boy was clearly of Cuban descent. He had his flaws but was still handsome, with a face that looked younger than the rest of his body. His eyes were a little too far away from each other, but they were large and friendly-looking. To Shana, they seemed to cloak an intimidating mystery lurking right beneath the surface. Dark features on a face that looked like it hadn’t seen much facial hair growth – ever.

However, he had muscles as prominent as Luke’s and – based on how Carii tensed up when they came on the scene – he clearly knew how to use them.

Not without me, ya?” Carlo announced with a tilted grin. When Naya looked at him in surprise, he shook his head. “You’re my sister now, and I’m not lettin’ you go back to that place alone. If you go back there to live, then I’m going too. You said we’re a team, right?”
